A few general quidelines to some of the basics. Just remember each wedding is different, but the following information is a good place to get started.

Receiving Lines:

Receiving lines serve many different purposes. First of all they allow each guest the opportunity to see the bride and groom and offer their best wishes and congratulations. Secondly it is an opportunity for introductions.

Traditionally receiving lines are comprised of the parents of the bride and groom, the bride and groom, the maid of honour and the bridesmaids.

As each guest passes through the line they should be introduced to those in the receiving line with whom they are not acquainted by the person standing adjacent to them.

Flower girls, ring bearers, and ushers are not part of the formal receiving line, but can mingle with the guests.

In the case of divorced parents organize the receiving line such that divorced parents do not have to stand next to each other.

Seating Arrangements:

Seating arrangements at the church may very depending on the religion and clergy. If you have any questions or concerns about seating arrangements you should address your clergy.

Typically the bride’s family and friends sit on the left hand side and the groom’s on the right. Parents are seated in the first pew, followed by other important guests. Often these pews are differentiated from the rest with special pew markers/bows. Sometimes general guests are seated evenly on both sides, if there is a strong imbalance.

If your church has two aisles the bride’s family and friends are usually seated on both sides of the left aisle and the grooms on the right. Parents and special guests usually sit next to the appropriate aisle, but in the center section.If the parents of the bride or groom are divorced they are seated in separate pews. For example the mother in the first and father in the second. Alternatively there may be a few rows of family member seated in-between if extra “space” is required. (Each situation is unique and may require some creativity and compromise to find the “right” solution for you.)

Each set of parents are usually seated at their own table with family, (close friends) and clergy.

Something Old, Something New…

Did you ever wonder how the quote “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue” started?

Something Old:

This refers to the brides previous way of living, before the wedding. It is suppose to symbolize the transition into her new life, whilst not forgetting the one she had.

Something New:

This is the second part of the transition. It signifies the future ahead and all the prosperity it shall bring.

Something Borrowed:

This item tends to be borrowed from another previously wed bride. You borrow it so that you may have all the luck and joy that the bride who first wore it has now in her marriage.

Something Blue:

Before Queen Victoria set the standard for marrying in white, Blue was the common colour to be wed in. Blue, much before white (in fact during biblical times) was the colour of purity, and thus, women would marry gowned in it. The artifact of blue is merely a testament to the original colour of purity.

Q: How many different colours should we incorporate into our wedding ceremony and reception venues?

A: Every wedding is unique, and bringing together all of your favourite design and décor details can be challenging. Tables and seating occupy a large portion of the wedding reception venue, so approach these items with care.

The linen, décor and chair covers should not take away from the cohesiveness of the venue or compete with the main focal points. For example, a bright sash on the chairs may distract from the centrepiece. If you have a subtle palette, you can get away with three or four tones of the same colour, but when you are going bold, keeping the selection down to two colours allows the centrepieces to pop and the theme to shine.

A great way to subtly bring in more colour is with reception stationery such as table numbers, menus, place cards and your seating chart. As well, accent tables such as a guest book, cake or candy table are a great place to bring in another colour or texture, adding to your overall feel without it becoming a distraction.

Q: How far in advance do we need to book our wedding photographer?

A: I generally suggest booking your photographer anywhere from one year to 18 months ahead of your wedding date to be safe. Of course it all depends on certain factors. For example, what time of year is it? Is it on a weekend or weekday? Is it a destination wedding?

Once you know which photographer you want for your wedding day, don’t procrastinate and take the chance that someone else will book them first. It will be a good feeling knowing that it’s booked and that you can cross that job off your list. You have lots of other things to think about for your wedding day!

Q: What style of dress will suit my body best?

A: When it comes to choosing a dress, there is no rule without exception. Some say that if you are pear shaped, then you should stick to an A-line silhouette to minimize the hips. That being said, if you want to wear a fit-to-flare dress and show off your curves, my advice is to go that route. The key is finding the perfect neckline; something that is a little wider across the top of the bustline, such as Maggie Sottero’s Chante (right) or Marianne (left) gown, will balance the hips and create an hourglass shape.

If you are petite, you may be told that a ball gown will overpower your smaller stature, but this isn’t necessarily true. You should match the volume of your skirt to your height and be the princess you’ve always wanted to be! (Middle gown, Miel by Aire Barcelona)

The bottom line is that you should try on all different shapes and styles. Trust your consultant and you will find the perfect gown. In some cases, the most flattering style is the one you least expect.

18 Months to One Year Before:

Announce your engagement.
Set your date and time for ceremony and reception.

All eyes will be on you. It sure sounds scary to be the centre of attention, but it doesn’t have to be if you have everything planned out. Our brides are always asking about timelines so here’s a checklist to ensure you will be camera ready for your big day.

1 YEAR

Book Artists: Reputable hair and makeup artists book up fast. If you have someone in mind, make sure to contact them sooner rather than later. A professional company should be able to show you their portfolio of work through social media or a website.

9 MONTHS

Skin Care: Drink plenty of water and always take your makeup off at the end of the day. Cleansing, toning, and moisturizing every morning and night can really improve your skin. If you have any troubling skin problems, such as acne, get in touch with a dermatologist to consider possible treatment options.

Hair: Try that new hair colour or cut, or start growing your hair if you need longer locks for the wedding hairstyle you envision.

6 MONTHS

Brows: I know 6 months seems like a long time before your wedding to get a brow wax, but it’s more about finding the right brow artist for you and getting your brows perfect in the months leading up to your big day.

Facials: Having a facial once every 4 weeks, coupled with your skincare routine at home, will help ensure you have the best skin possible on your wedding day. Facials are super relaxing and give your skin a bright glow afterwards.

3 MONTHS

Hair & Makeup Trials: Book your hair and makeup trials on the day of your stagette, bridal shower, or other special occasion.

1 WEEK

Skin: Have your last facial at least one week before your wedding day. Make sure it’s the same facial you’ve had before to avoid any skin reactions.

Eyes: If you’ve decided to have lash extensions, it’s time to have them applied by the same beauty technician who applied them correctly for you initially (this can be done a few days to one week before your wedding day).

Hair: Final trim and colour.

2 – 3 DAYS

Nails : Gel or shellac nails are a great way to ensure your nail polish won’t chip.

Body: Relax with a massage.

THE DAY BEFORE

Body: Shower, shave, and moisturize.

Hair: Wash and condition (if not on the morning your wedding day).

Face: Tone and moisturize.

THE BIG DAY

Hair: Make sure your hair is clean and dry.

Body: Moisturize your body.

Face: Use toner, moisturizer, and a facial oil on your face for a glowing complexion.

Teeth: Brush your teeth before you get your makeup done.

Finding the right photographer for the most documented day of your life can be like putting together Swedish furniture. It requires a buddy, there are only pictures for reference, and the smiley cartoon person pointing at what they want you to do only makes it worse. Fear not, I have some tips on how to get your furniture, er photographer, all figured out.

Wedding photographers start booking anywhere from 18-24 months before your date. If you have someone you ABSOLUTELY have to have, don’t wait! Snag your date, lock it in with your retainer, and check that baby off the list. “But Chantelle, what if I have ZERO idea where to start?”

Image Style & Quality

Portfolio quality should be the first thing that makes you stop scrolling when looking for a wedding photographer. An experienced photographer should be able to show you a variety of photos, not just their Instagram highlight reel. Every photographer also has a different way of editing. Whether it’s dark and moody, light and airy, or classic and natural like me, make sure the style resonates with you and your partner and is something you still want to look at in a year.

Personality

Within the first five minutes of meeting someone I can tell if we’re going to be #bffs. It should be the same for you and your photographer. If you don’t like the way I use too many exclamation points in my emails, the way I scrunch my nose to lift my glasses, OR that I might reach out to hug you, then we aren’t a good fit, and that’s ok.

Experience

An experienced photographer knows the amount of time they need to document each part of the day accurately to maximize your schedule while producing exceptional photos. Make sure they’ve been in difficult situations like a rainy day, or huge reception hall. Don’t worry if they haven’t photographed your venue before. An experienced photographer can kick ass in any situation.

Word of Mouth

Talking to real couples or seeing real couple reviews is way better than me just telling you I can do things. Talk to your friends, talk to their friends, and talk to your chosen potential photographers about their reviews and see the related galleries.

Value

So this is a big deciding factor for folks and is usually at the top of this list instead of down here. But finding a photographer based on price doesn’t always guarantee you’ll get the above points. There are no do overs, so take your time and invest wisely. Most photographers have a variety of pricing options and payment plans; Get all the details and make a wellrounded decision.

Lindsey and Andrew had been friends since the eleventh grade, never leaving the friend zone for almost fifteen years until one day they realized what was in front of their faces all along. They dated for two and a half years—bonding over their dog, Carl Winslow, spending time together at the lake, and building a relationship with a solid foundation of friendship.

The couple got engaged on a trip to Vancouver with Lindsey’s sister and her boyfriend in August 2017 when Andrew popped the question in the middle of a group photo opportunity, though Andrew had a hard time actually getting the words out.

Krista and Bret both love nature and wanted a venue that was full of greenery for their summer wedding. They were lucky enough to have Bret’s aunt and uncle agree to host their big day on their beautiful property which included horses and a picturesque tree line framing the tent. Most of all, they wanted their love for each other and their gratitude to their guests to shine through.

They added personal touches by having their pup’s face on Koozies as wedding favours, along with Bret’s mom’s famous habanero jelly. They also had custom games for their guests to play over cocktail hour, a scotch and cigar bar, and live music.

To achieve a dreamy vibe, the couple had a soft blush and gold palette, loads of greenery, whimsical dream catchers, their favourite quotes custom-made on large slabs of wood, and florals dripping off the tent.

Their guests told them the wedding was “so them” and “so full of love” which truly meant the world to Krista and Bret, as they never wanted to get so lost in the process that the day would get away from what it is truly meant to be—committing to the love of your life in front of all the people you hold dear.

Compliment Your Personal Style

When you start searching for your dream venue and envision your wedding, try to remember who you are in everyday life. What are your likes and dislikes? Do you like vintage or modern? Industrial or rustic? Use your current living space, wardrobe, and interests as inspiration for your wedding day style. You want your big day to reflect who you are as individuals and as a couple. Guests who attend your event should see décor and touches that are “so you”.

Stay Off Pinterest

Now that you’ve narrowed down a wedding style, stick to it! You’re going to cause yourself stress and confusion by veering off the chosen look and feel. We see it all the time! The couple has decided they love rustic, but they come across a modern minimalist Pinterest board and start questioning every decision they’ve made. Stick to what you fell in love with originally and if you’re still drawn to the other style, look to incorporate small touches without doing a complete overhaul.

Work With The Venue

Choosing your date and venue are the first big decisions you’re going to make when planning your wedding. Make sure the room you choose and the surrounding grounds compliment the overall vision. Don’t choose a space that needs a complete overhaul and will cost a fortune to transform from industrial warehouse-industrial to garden chic. The goal is to find a space that has the overall aesthetic and feel so that you can focus on the details and ways to make it “you”.

In true Winnipeg fashion, Carla and Nick met through friends at a Halloween wedding social. They talked for what felt like most of the night and the rest is history.

One Tuesday evening in November, Carla came home from work to find the living room clean and organized and didn’t think anything of it—she was excited to see the pillows on the couch were finally where they belonged! After dinner, Nick had said he was going to teach their dog, Penny, a new trick. He proceeded to put a dog treat in Carla’s hand and took Penny upstairs with him. He told Carla to call Penny and she came down with a tag on her collar that said, “Marry me?” and when Carla looked up, there was Nick with the ring.

Carla knew right from the beginning she wanted elegant and timeless colours for their wedding party’s attire. Celina and Curtis met in August 2014 in a Winnipeg nightclub. It was a last minute decision to go that changed both of their lives forever. From the moment they met, Celina and Curtis couldn’t get enough of each other and ended up texting each other until the next day.

Since then, Celina and Curtis have gone through many different challenges, which only made their love for one another grow stronger. In August 2017, they went on a family vacation to the Galapagos Islands. They had planned out the day, intending to go Scuba Diving and take a private cruise around the Islands. One night before going to the next island on their cruise, Curtis took them to the top of the boat and proposed under the stars – it was incredibly romantic. It was the perfect private moment with family close by to help celebrate.

From the beginning of their engagement, Celina knew she wanted to have two wedding days – One to respect her East Indian heritage and one that was more non-traditional the very next day. Curtis loved the idea of an outdoor wedding with natural beauty, while Celina was is all about bold classic and elegant looks. Sonal and Jasdeep met through mutual friends at a Winnipeg Art Gallery event. They spent what felt like the entire night talking and getting to know each other. It didn’t take long after that for them to realize that they had something special.

During a trip to Vancouver, Jasdeep had planned a surprise dinner at Stanley Park. They had arrived at the park early so he suggested they take a walk along the trail. Sonal was confused as she was not dressed for a hike, but she did not know that Jasdeep had mapped out the exact spot where he was going to propose. As the sun was setting over the water, he pulled out a ring and got down on one knee.

Sonal and Jasdeep knew they wanted to incorporate key elements of both their cultures and religions into their wedding day. Having two ceremonies back to back and a full reception the next day in the same room meant a lot of careful planning and strategic design and custom décor elements had to be created. With the help of Emma and the EBE team, they were able to create an elegant and timeless look with a neutral palette of ivory, gold, blush pink and greenery. This allowed for the bright and rich colours of the beautiful traditional Indian attire to shine.

Rachael and Jeff met in 2011 when they were working across the mall from one another. Jeff had come in to Rachael’s workplace looking for lotion. Rachael thought he would be looking for a manly scent and burst out laughing when Jeff asked for a fruity scent like Mango! He went back to work smelling like a Mango, and Rachael couldn’t stop thinking about their conversation. About a week later, Rachael got Jeff’s name from his co-worker and found him on Facebook. She took a chance and asked him for his number, knowing it would be worth the risk.

They got engaged while skating at The Forks with their friends. They were under the bridge when their friends suggested taking some photos, which was all a part of Jeff’s master plan. As they were taking photos, Jeff spun Rachael around to face him and started to kneel down. She asked him what he was doing and to get back up when he then pulled out a ring and it finally clicked. It was the BEST surprise.

Rachael and Jeff’s wedding was the most magical day of their lives. They wanted it to be whimsical, like they were in an enchanted forest. It was a backyard wedding, with lots of greenery, tulle and twinkle lights. They had grey table cloths with burgundy napkins and floral centrepieces that had pops of burgundy, blush pink, white and green. There were gold accents, lanterns and mason jars with tea lights everywhere.

Weddings are confusing, complicated and can be stressful. I could sit here and tell you all about how a wedding planner can help with all three of those things but I’d rather give you some tips and tools to make the process a little easier.

Breathe

Yes, I realize this seems like common sense, you do that every day, but I know sometimes we want to rush through the process. Take a step back, breathe and enjoy. This is your special day and you need to enjoy the engagement season.

Incorporate You

Ensure you are incorporating YOU into your wedding day. You’re the ones being celebrated, right? Ask yourself, “What represents you as a couple?”, “What are your hobbies?”, “What do you love doing together?” There are ways to incorporate these elements. Make it your own by the songs you choose, the people giving toasts, the kissing games, favours, or entertainment for your guests. The options are endless!

I have heard so often: “I have to do a garter toss, I have to have a first dance, I have to have a big wedding, I have to have a wedding party” and on and on it goes. I am here to tell you: You do not need to do anything you don’t want to, your wedding day is about you and your partner. Yes, I am not oblivious to the fact that there will always be others that have opinions about your wedding day, but look at your wedding day through your own eyes and ask yourself: “Do I really want this?”, “Does this represent us as a couple?”, “Do I care one way or the other?”

Before Choosing a Professional Makeup Artist Consider the Following:

There are very few opportunities in life where we get to do things exactly as we’d like, but now you’re in the driver’s seat, and this is your time to take the reins, write your own rule book, and be the change you want to see in the world. In more simple terms … just do what feels right. Relax, experience, enjoy, and plan a wonderful wedding that you and your guests will cherish and be proud of because it was truly a reflection of you.

Here are a few simple tips to help you start your own traditions and create a wedding style guide to help you plan your wedding with personality!

Choose meaningful details such as objects, places and events that hold special memories. Give speeches from the heart, inject some humor, share fun facts about the couple, milestone moments, or stories of how you met.
Select unconventional décor like whimsical mismatched furniture, make a custom backdrop, try bold colours like neon and rainbows, or give colourful parasols to guests while sitting.
Wear unique attire . Incorporate lifestyle and cultural elements, era or pop culture themes, or unique alternatives for bouquets such as succulents and crystals.
Choose a non-traditional wedding party including kids, grandparents or pets.

Inclusive Wedding Vendors and Resources for the 2SLGBTQ+ Community

LOVE is LOVE Collectives is a local wedding planning resource for the 2SLGBTQ+ community where couples and vendors offering an inclusion culture within their business can work collaboratively in a safe space. Vendors promote and empower the community by showing consistency of inclusivity throughout their brands, present an environment where folks can freely express who they are, and partner with others that hold the same values on inclusion and equality.

Eddie and Ryan Mendoza started the local collective in response to a need rather than a want. “We’d heard of a lesbian couple being turned away from wedding vendors because of who they are and it broke our hearts,” says Eddie. “This actually happened to us when planning our own wedding. It was a horrible feeling that we still remember well. If we can provide even a little assistance in keeping the excitement of the process alive, why wouldn’t we? We chose our wedding vendors based on being seen as equals and human. This allowed us to be authentic in who we are as a couple and not worry about what folks thought when we had our first kiss.”

The #loveislovevendor application asks broad questions regarding vendors’ knowledge of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, how they currently support the community, and what makes their business a safe place. Some vendors are community, but many are not. They are amazing allies open to your guidance and insight.

Tips for Choosing Inclusive Wedding Vendors

Be your authentic self when you sit down with your wedding vendors. This will allow them to get to know the real you and give them the room for you to get to know them and create a comfortable and trusting relationship.
When you introduce yourself to vendors, include your pronouns. This is a simple and easy way to open up the pronoun dialog early in the relationship.
Be open and honest with your vendors about your diverse needs. In a perfect world, conversations around family, phobias, or fears would not exist. This is the ideal opportunity to educate them about chosen family and some of the silent struggles the community faces.

Starting out as a small, Manitoba catering business in 2012, Blue Haze Barbecue has quickly grown into a highly sought-after catering company.
